Im going public today and wanted to share my reasons in why I decided to homeschool my 2nd grader and kindergartener.
It’s almost a year my husband and I been homeschooling my 2nd grader and kindergartener. People always asks me, how do I like homeschooling? I LOVE IT and if you ask Eleni and Nico they will say the same thing. I’ll be honest with you, I was very reluctant and scared before I made this big decision last year, but after many discussion with my husband and friends who are already homeschooling, I was able to pull the trigger and go full force to the new homeschooling community. I’ve been so lucky to have an amazing support group too. The idea of homeschooling has changed tremendously and I’m here to break those homeschool stereotypes. Not everyone is overly religious, ackward, helicopter mom, and antisocial. It’s just another way of education.
Here are some of the things that helped me decide if homeschooling was right for our family:
- Both kids are advanced learners. Nico is GIFTED (This term gifted doesn’t mean better, just different way of learning and thinking) Homeschooling allowed us to strengthen their core, challenging their minds while supplementing more on their weakness. More time to immerse in areas of interest.
- Time is Value. We don’t waste time, kids are engaged and learning every minute of it.
- Travel. We want to incorporate learning by experiencing it.
- Spending more time together– They are young once, want to enjoy every bits of it while we can.
- I’m a stay at home mom and my husband works from home and we both LOVE the idea of homeschooling.
- My most important reason, being able to train them to be a self reliance adult. Something that is hard to teach in a “curriculum base” is how to become a self reliance, how to take care of your themselves, developing emotional agility, and grit. So much that is needed in the EQ rather than IQ.
I know that everyone’s parenting and educational beliefs are different so what works for our family might not work for you. But we believe in “classical education.” I highly recommend reading about it HERE
Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think–Albert Einstein
Life has definitely been different in our household. It’s not easy but it is not hard. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I will discuss more in the future on how our typical day looks like; and if you are thinking about homeschooling, I always encourage and say anyone can do it!
So we need to squash the delusional, self-aggrandizing idea based in classism that “homeschooling is not for everyone.”
