Nolan’s First Birthday Party

I’m a little late writing this post since Nolan is now almost 21 months.  But as I was thinking about my first blog post,  I thought to myself, why not start with Nolan’s First Birthday Party and I can introduce you my family.  A birthday party is always a perfect place to meet the family, don’t you think so?

Nolan’s party inspiration was the bold colorful balloons to represent happiness that he brings to our family.  When I see the balloons it just puts a smile in my face, just how Nolan does. I kept the cakes’ designs modern with an art deco feel to counter balance the balloons to keep it classic.

In the Korean culture,  first year celebration is called DOL. It is a tradition that celebrates the first birthday of a baby. This ceremony blesses the child with a prosperous future and has taken on great significance in Korea.  He is wearing a traditional Korean costume called Hanbok.

He then plays a fortune telling game, where you lay items like, pencil (represents you will be a scholar), thread (represents long life), rice (will never go hungry), money (you will be rich), gavel ( you will be a lawyer/judge)  and stethoscope (you will be a doctor).  You place baby a few feet away and he crawls to the item they are most interested and that’s what they will be in the future. A fun game to play always.

Guess what Nolan will be in the future? He chose the gavel, he will be a lawyer.

Now that I look back to the party months later, I’m so happy to be able to share this again.   Not to
